Booze
Environmentally friendly booze
Traditionally, most wine came from France, but with countries like Australia and Chile getting in on the act, your booze may have flown half way around the world before it ends up in your local off-license. Buying locally-produced alcohol will reduce your eco-footprint.
Make your choice of poison even more environmentally-friendly by buying organic. There are a wide range of organic wines, beers and ciders which are easily available.
Waiter, waiter, there's something strange in my drink!!
Students have been known to drink some nasty stuff when the loan money is running dry, but do you really know what is floating around in your pint? Some beers, ciders and wines are clarified using the swim bladders of fish (isinglass), egg albumen (hens? reproductive waste) or gelatine (boiled animal bone, skin and tendons).
Order vegan booze from the Animal Aid shop
(champage, organic wine, cider, lager and fruit wine - sent by the caseload and Animal Aid members receive a 10% discount, if that sways you...)
Where do I get cruelty-free booze from?
1Some wine producers and supermarkets now label which of their wines are suitable for veggies and vegans - the Co-op is particularly good at this - but if you are having trouble finding out, ask an office employee to check on a list.
2Most spirits are animal-free (praise be!), although Campari contains the red food colouring cochineal, made from crushed beetles. Yuk.
3Pay attention because this is one of the most important things you will ever learn! The beers on sale in Sam Smiths pubs are virtually 100% vegan - and also around 30% cheaper than most other pubs, with a pint coming in at less than £2! It's cheap, it's veggie, it'll get you wasted! You can't quibble with that can you?

If you're lucky enough to live in one of the areas listed below, check out these veggie/vegan pubs (we can't vouch for the veggie/veganness of all their wines and beers though, so do double check):
